Default boosting hp in a 200 c.i. 66

I recently bought a 66 coupe with the inline-6. The 200 c.i. engine is a little underpowered and I need to squeeze out some more power, but I have a budget of $500. Anyone have any suggestions?

Put a V8 in.

You could get a header, custom cam, mill the head and put a 2 barrell carb on with an adapter but it would cost more than $500 and would only make 15 or so more horsepower. For $500 you could find a good running 289 that will make 200hp from the factory.

Putting a V8 in is much more then just putting in a V8. You got the transmission, driveshaft, rearend, and thats just a start. I say you just drive it and live with it. Its not a fast car and never will be.

I've done this swap before. I had a 65 Mustang with a 6 cylinder in high school. The swap is not complicated at all. Transmissions are cheap and easy to come by and it costs about $100 to have a drive shaft shortened and rebalanced. The stock rear end will work fine.

Alot of people doubt the 200 CI engine when in fact, it has more torque per pound than a stock 289 or 351 for that matter. Ive rebuilt my 200 engine just recently. I bored it out, installed comp cams, pertronix ignitor, hooker headers, true dual flows, the whole package and i can honestly tell you that horse power is definitely possible. Check out fordsix dot com. Were talking about guys that mod the hell outta these sixes. From triple single carbs to supercharged aussie sixes, everythings being done. Why not make something unique and powerful rather than being another cookie cutter classic V-8

I don't think anyone doubted it, but its expensive and you are very limited on power potential because the head and intake is one piece. Please define horsepower per pound??? Per pound of what? Without being able to do any head work your horsepower gains will be minimal. When you start getting into head swaps, Aussie heads, supercharger, turbos, etc you also start getting into expense.

get a second exhaust manifold split them both and run 2 pipes out. Tons more power and it's cheap. This will let you have as much power as 289.

I have a 66 mustang with a 200 .It runs with the 8 bangers all day long.I lookwed hard at the 302 before building the 6.IT has J@E pistons,Crane solid cam, roller rockers, 250 head with the big valves,ported@polished.I modified the log and stuck 3 65 corvair 1 barrels on it.I modified a duraspark dist with a 75 dodge ignition module, for a quick spark.Back it all up with a 92 GT T5,a76 Granada rear, with 411 gears and you can run with the best of them.Hope this helps.

It may be a little expensive to build the i6,but when done you have something to be proud of.I have more fun with this than any 8 i ever had. That includes 2 10 second falcons.
